Anime and Manga
Anime and Manga originated from Japan in 1910’s and is now
well known worldwide. But first what is Anime and Manga, well Anime are Japanese
animation and manga are Japanese comics.
For me, my main interest in both anime and manga would have
to be how the hair is drawn, mainly because I have always been fascinated with
how detailed it is drawn, based by the tones of colour and the use of line.
From my research of Anime and Manga, I have observed that the
manner in which the hair is drawn is an attempt of the artist to reflect the
characteristics of the character. For
girls, short hair can make the character come across as rebellious, pig tails
comes across as childish, ponytail comes across as athletic, plaited hair comes
across as mature and showing forehead signifies wealth (9gag.com, 2014). However, I am not convinced that this is
completely accurate as from my experience in following Anime and Manga, not all
characters are defined by the manner in which their hair has been drawn, i.e. In Ouran High School Host Club, majority of
the childish girls have different hair styles ranging from short too long (Igarishi,
2009) .
Hair in anime is unnaturally lively, colourful or uniquely
styled. Colour is also a main feature when it comes to hair. The colour of hair can vary from natural
colours, i.e. black, blonde, brown, to vibrate colours of violet, pink, reds,
to add to the character’s personality.
Majority of Anime’s are created from manga’s, where the
artist will draw the hair to set the scene which gives an impression of the
atmosphere the character is in and their personality for the audience. For
additional visual effect for the audience, hair movement is exaggerated by the
artists to emphasize the action and emotions of a character. Like Tamaki Suoh from Ouran Host Club there are scenes where he becomes more over
dramatic.
My favourite Artist would have to Be Hatori Bisco. I think
the main reason she is my favourite artist is mainly because one of her works
were the start of my obsession with manga and anime.
Over the years anime and manga has changed with the use of
technology, originally anime was created by the use of hand-painted cels, but now
with technology anime is now made into digital paintings done on computers, not
only is this easier to make but it’s also more affordable. (MacWilliams,
2008) .
Honestly out of the anime and manga I prefer anime more,
mainly because I find it fascinating mainly because not only is it animated and
coloured, but I love how some anime just grab a scene from the manga.
