RRAW: Seminar Speech- Anime/Manga

Anime and Manga

Anime and Manga originated from Japan in 1910’s and is now well known worldwide. But first what is Anime and Manga, well Anime are Japanese animation and manga are Japanese comics.
For me, my main interest in both anime and manga would have to be how the hair is drawn, mainly because I have always been fascinated with how detailed it is drawn, based by the tones of colour and the use of line.
From my research of Anime and Manga, I have observed that the manner in which the hair is drawn is an attempt of the artist to reflect the characteristics of the character.  For girls, short hair can make the character come across as rebellious, pig tails comes across as childish, ponytail comes across as athletic, plaited hair comes across as mature and showing forehead signifies wealth  (9gag.com, 2014).    However, I am not convinced that this is completely accurate as from my experience in following Anime and Manga, not all characters are defined by the manner in which their hair has been drawn, i.e.  In Ouran High School Host Club, majority of the childish girls have different hair styles ranging from short too long  (Igarishi, 2009).
Hair in anime is unnaturally lively, colourful or uniquely styled. Colour is also a main feature when it comes to hair.   The colour of hair can vary from natural colours, i.e. black, blonde, brown, to vibrate colours of violet, pink, reds, to add to the character’s personality.
Majority of Anime’s are created from manga’s, where the artist will draw the hair to set the scene which gives an impression of the atmosphere the character is in and their personality for the audience. For additional visual effect for the audience, hair movement is exaggerated by the artists to emphasize the action and emotions of a character.  Like Tamaki Suoh from Ouran Host Club there are scenes where he becomes more over dramatic.
My favourite Artist would have to Be Hatori Bisco. I think the main reason she is my favourite artist is mainly because one of her works were the start of my obsession with manga and anime.
Over the years anime and manga has changed with the use of technology, originally anime was created by the use of hand-painted cels, but now with technology anime is now made into digital paintings done on computers, not only is this easier to make but it’s also more affordable. (MacWilliams, 2008).
Honestly out of the anime and manga I prefer anime more, mainly because I find it fascinating mainly because not only is it animated and coloured, but I love how some anime just grab a scene from the manga.

Artist: Wayne Youle
Title: I am what you make me
Year: 2009
Media: Paper bags

In this art piece Maori artist Wayne Youle has made a art piece of two piles of paper bags labelled maori and Pakeha, with only holes where eyes can be seen when worn. Because of facial features, eyes and skin colour can be seen as what culture people may be.

In this art piece I think the artist may tell the the viewers that appearances may differ whether you are brought up from a different way based on culture. I think this would be my favourite art piece so far mainly because of how all you see are the eyes on a person and label of what culture you are. I think the message to this art piece is that even when you wear the paper bag you may look the same but you are different based on who you are and where you are from.

Artist: Man Ray
Title: Observatory Time
Year: 1936
Media: Photography

Surrealism artist Man Ray created art piece Observatory Time, using both painting and photography, where the lips are floating above the Paris Observatory.

In this art piece it is shown to be a black and white photograph, it includes a painting of lips in the sky. The photograph also shows a nude woman laying on her side and a chessboard near her feet. In the artists, Man Ray, art piece it some how hints the woman may be sleeping, dreaming about either a nightmare or fantasy dream. The lips of this art piece have now been used for 'The Rocky Horror Show' adverts.

In my opinion Man Ray is showing the audience his love for France through this image, maybe as dream for him to go back to France

Artist: Hannah Hoch
Title: Cut with the Kitchen Knife
Year: 1919
Media: Collage of pasted papers

Hannah Hoch was an artist apart of the Dada movement of the early 20 century after World War One, where a group of artists got together and began to creak art works that questioned the limits of art and humanity which may have been about the horrors of the war.

In this image everything is glue on each other in layers creating a collage effect to the art piece. Majority of the ripped piece are random pieces of papers from newspaper articles to photographs, also how the many of the paper pieces were in different tones of tones.

I kinda like the messy way the pieces have been stuck on, it's not perfectly placed, but rather in a stuck all over composition, it's like the artist was giving her views on politics.

Artist: Kara Walker
Title: You Do
Year: 1993/1994
Media: Cut paper on wall

This art piece comes a across as silhouettes of two women with objects in each of there hands, although the over exaggeration of the silhouettes it also shows a message towards the audience. In my opinion I think the artist, Kara Walker who is South African, comes across as pissed off which is understandable as her message with this art piece in my opinion is her anger towards the treatment towards slavery in South Africa before the civil war.

In the art work she points out the stereotypes of the silhouettes, by showing women using Voodoo on the man, inflicting pain by using pins, as did her ancestors by Voodoo dolls which came from Haiti.

Artist: Tom French
Title: Allusions
Year: 2012
Media: Black and White Acrylic

The skull in the artists acrylic paintings are actually made up a couple of lovers, with the way both people are painted it creates a depth of field effect which helps the painting to create a optical illusion of a skull at first sight, so people looking at this art piece would have to look twice to actually see that there are actually people.

I actually find it quiet interesting how you have to look at the painting more than once to realize there is more to the painting than just a skull, but also how instead of a group of people it in fact a couple within a skull giving a dark side to the romance between the two people.

This art piece it self reminds me a lot like death and love blended together, which makes me question this painting, whether it is a death of a past relationship or lover? This also creates a illusion to your conscious and unconscious mind, which can be both beautiful and disturbing.

Kaleidoscope Experiment

From watching one of Jack Strify music video, I liked the idea of how a few scenes had a kaleidoscope effect to the music video. So I decided to try to make this effect for my final film. Here is a few of the

This was my first edit where I actually researched how to create a kaleidoscope effect, but I didn't really like how this kinda came out though, mainly because I wanted the film to be replicated.

Then with this film I decided to use the replicate effect in premiere, then use horizontal and mirror effect to create both this film and the one below.

As you can see in this film and I just noticed this as soon as I up loaded this is how the bottom left corner, well nearly the whole left side of the film look pretty normal. Even though these edit take a while to do it creates a cool effect which I would like to use in my film.

Film with the Use of Mirrors

I got this Idea from Jack Strify's music videos, Sanctuary and Halo, which have mirror effects in the films. I did have a video done but it kinda disappeared on my computer after recording it, since I had used photo booth there were already setting on it. I want to make a reflective edit through premier, so I will study more on how to create these effects on premier through research.

Music Artist: Jack Strify
Title: Sanctuary
Year: 2012
Artist: Marcel Gothow and Jack Strify

These were the scenes I favoured the most mainly in the the 3rd act where the singer is filmed then these scenes were edited so they all look like a kaleidoscope.

I like that idea for my film. After researching I found out a way to create the kaleidoscope effect to my own work. This is the film I found to create this effect.

Artist: Marcel Gothow and Jack Strify

Through out the beginning music video I notice that the singer, Jack Strify, was singing and doing body movements in scenes, which are edited to create a mirror effect to the film. I actually like how the

What I also noticed that near the end of the film unlike the beginning of the film which were high key lighting scenes, a few of the ending scenes were done in low key lighting. This also a main aspect in my final film that I would like to do, between certain scenes.
